T. Kalaimani

Kalaimani was born in Madurai where he grew up, studied, and worked for a while. He now lives in Sydney, Australia.

After completing his school education in a municipal high school at Madurai, he went on to complete his graduation and post-graduation courses at Madura College, Spicer Memorial College (Pune), and Madurai Kamaraj University.

He worked as a Science/Biology teacher at Madurai Seventh-Day Adventist School for 12 years. Whilst teaching at the school, he wrote the script for many dramas and one-act plays and staged them during school functions.

Kalaimani then migrated to Australia and pursued his teaching career as a Senior Biology teacher at Lilydale Adventist Academy in Melbourne after getting approval from the New South Wales Department of Education. Afterwards, he joined the New South Wales Police Force and worked as Intelligence Analyst in the Investigation Department. He has been awarded medals and certificates of excellence during his service. Presently, he is working as an Insights Analyst in Transport for New South Wales.

He was accredited by Australia’s “National Accreditation Authority for Translators & Interpreters” as a Level 3 professional translator and examiner/marker. He was one of five members of NAATI panel of examiners representing the State of New South Wales.

He is a poet, story writer, playwright, journalist, and award-winning photographer. Photography is his passion, and one of his photos won a prize in the Visual Taste competition held by the popular Tamil fortnightly Junior Vikatan.

His stories and articles have been published in Tamil Murasu, a Singaporean newspaper. His poems have been published in Dinamalar and in Kalappai and Sangamam magazines of Sydney. He was the sub-editor of India Post (English) and editor of Sangamam (Tamil) in Sydney.

As the secretary of the Sydney Tamil Manram, an organization dedicated to promoting Tamil language in Australia, he hosted Tamil literary functions and invited dignitaries like University Vice Chancellors and Tamil scholars from Tamil Nadu as chief guests. He also presided over several Kaviarangams (poetry recital events) and recited Tamil poems.

Kalaimani penned Sulukkia Sahabdam a few decades ago. It is a comic satire, presenting the history of the Tamil Sangam period in a humorous vein and parodying the characters in Tamil literature. The author’s self-satire is explicit in proclaiming this drama as the “unenacted sixth epic” in Tamil. There are five one-act plays annexed at the end of the drama. His first Tamil Anthology, Akara Muthala, a compilation of his Tamil poems, has been published recently.

பள்ளி ஆசிரியர், புகைப்படக் கலைஞர், எழுத்தாளர், கவிஞர், நாடக ஆசிரியர், பத்திரிக்கையாளர் என்ற பன்முகங்களைக் கொண்ட திரு. கலைமணி மதுரை மண்ணின் மைந்தர். பிறந்து, வளர்ந்து, படித்து, பணிபுரிந்ததெல்லாம் தமிழ் வளர்த்த தென்மதுரையில்தான்.

மதுரை நகராட்சி உயர்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் படித்து, மதுரைக் கல்லூரியில் பட்டப்படிப்பை முடித்து, தாய்-தந்தை வழியில் முதல் பட்டதாரியானவர். தொடர்ந்து, புனே ஸ்பைசர் நினைவுக் கல்லூரியிலும், மதுரை காமராசர் பல்கலைக் கழகத்திலும் மேற்படிப்பை நிறைவுசெய்து, மதுரை செவந்த்-டே அட்வென்டிஸ்ட் மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் அறிவியல் ஆசிரியராகப் பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டுகள் பணிபுரிந்தார்.

அதன்பின் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவிற்குப் புலம்பெயர்ந்து, மெல்போர்னில் முதுநிலை உயிரியல் ஆசிரியராக ஆசிரியப் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்தார். பின்னர் சிட்னியில் நியூ சவுத் வேல்ஸ் போலீஸ் உளவுத்துறையில் சேர்ந்து புலனாய்வாளராகப் பணிபுரியும் காலத்தில், காவல்துறை உயரதிகாரிகளால் பாராட்டுச் சான்றிதழ்களும், நினைவுப் பதக்கங்களும் பெற்றுள்ளார். மேலும் ஆஸ்திரேலிய அரசின் அங்கீகாரம் பெற்ற உயர்நிலை மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளராகவும், தேர்வாளராகவும் இருந்துள்ளார். தற்போது நியூ சவுத் வேல்ஸ் போக்குவரத்துத் துறையில் நுண்ணறிவுப் பிரிவில் பகுப்பாய்வாளராகப் பணிபுரிகிறார்.

புகைப்படக் கலையின் மீதுள்ள ஆர்வமிகுதியால், கல்லூரிக் காலம் முதல் புகைப்படங்கள் எடுக்கத் துவங்கி, அவை ஜூனியர் விகடன் போன்ற பத்திரிக்கையிலும் பிரசுரமாகியுள்ளன.

கதைகள், கட்டுரைகள் சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் முரசுப் பத்திரிக்கையிலும், கவிதைகள் சிட்னியில் வெளியாகும் கலப்பை, சங்கமம் போன்ற சஞ்சிகைகளிலும் வெளிவந்துள்ளன. ஓரங்க நாடகங்கள், குறு நாடகங்களை எழுதி, இயக்கி மேடையேற்றியுள்ளார். கல்லூரிக்காலம் தொட்டு கவிதைகள் எழுதுவதில் பேரார்வம் உண்டு.

ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில் சிட்னி தமிழ் மன்றத்தின் செயலாளராகப் பணியாற்றி, சிட்னி வானொலிகளில் செய்தி வாசிப்பாளராகவும், தமிழ் நாட்டிலிருந்து வருகை தந்த பல்கலைக் கழக துணைவேந்தர்கள் மற்றும் கவிஞர்கள் பங்கேற்ற இலக்கிய விழாக் கவியரங்க மேடைகளில் தலைமை ஏற்றுக் கவிதை மொழிபவராகவும் இருந்துள்ளார்.

“அகர முதல” என்னும் இந்நூல் அவரது முதல் கவிதைத் தொகுப்பு வெளியீடாகும்.
